The Role of Attachment in Motherhood and Parenting

A pregnant woman or a mother caring for young children often feels a strong need for support and care for herself. In such circumstances, the activation of attachment behaviors appears to be a universal phenomenon and should be seen as normal (John Bowlby). A father’s support is extremely important during this time. A child’s attachment behaviors are triggered by pain, fatigue, fear, or even the perception that the mother is inaccessible. The child’s behavior will vary depending on the intensity of these stressors. The biological function of these behaviours is to seek protection and avoid separation.
