Think Positive Thoughts!

There are certain phrases that should not be said to someone going through a crisis whether due to a serious loss or a severe illness. Far more important than offering advice is simply listening and being present. Silent support can be much more helpful than well-intentioned suggestions.

As social beings, it is natural for us to seek solutions, and a compassionate person, in particular, will want to encourage and offer solutions. However, there are situations where a quick fix is not possible—where one must go through significant hardships.

That is why it is essential to simply be there – to stand by someone battling cancer or someone struggling with the aftermath of a traumatic experience. Listen, listen, listen!

Try to ask open-ended questions (ones that cannot be answered with just “yes” or “no”), and truly hear and absorb what is being said. Refrain from rushing to offer advice or comfort – just be present so the person feels they are not alone.

This serves as a workday reflection, meant to inspire kindness. It arises from conversations with those going through difficult times – people who desperately need support and a listening ear to help them overcome loss, fear, or despair, even if just for a brief moment.
